At Practice Perfect, we specialize in delivering professional medical billing services in New Jersey for clinics, hospitals, and private practices of all sizes. Our team understands New Jersey-specific payer rules, Medicaid regulations, and commercial insurance processes, ensuring that every claim is clean, compliant, and paid faster.
Whether you’re running a small practice or a multi-specialty group, we tailor our solutions to your workflow so you can focus on patient care while we handle the billing complexity.
New Jersey Medical Billing: Payers, Medicare and Medicaid
Practices in New Jersey bill NJ FamilyCare (the state’s Medicaid and CHIP program), Medicare Part B through Novitas Solutions (Jurisdiction L), and commercial plans such as Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, alongside national carriers like Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare and Humana. Each payer has its own enrollment, authorization and claim-edit rules, so a claim that is clean for one payer is often rejected by another.
What we check for New Jersey practices before claims are submitted:
- Payer enrollment and credentialing for every provider and location, including Medicaid managed care plans
- Patient eligibility verification at scheduling, because coverage often moves between Medicaid, Medicare Advantage and commercial plans
- Prior authorization requirements by payer and service
- ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS coding and modifier accuracy against current payer policy
Practice Perfect provides outsourced medical billing, coding, credentialing and revenue cycle management for New Jersey practices. Every new practice starts with a free billing audit that shows where claims are being denied or delayed.
New Jersey Payers We Bill Every Day
New Jersey has a dense, highly insured population, one dominant statewide insurer, a large Medicaid program run through managed care and many patients who cross state lines for care. Our team bills all of the major payers:
- NJ FamilyCare (New Jersey Medicaid): run by the New Jersey Division of Medical Assistance and Health Services (DMAHS), with members enrolled in managed care organizations such as Aetna Better Health of New Jersey, Fidelis Care, Horizon NJ Health, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan and Wellpoint. The plan roster can change, so we confirm each member’s current plan before every visit.
- Original Medicare: Part B claims processed by Novitas Solutions, the Medicare Administrative Contractor for New Jersey (Jurisdiction L, shared with Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland and Pennsylvania).
- Commercial insurers: Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Oxford and AmeriHealth New Jersey.
- Medicare Advantage: plan choices change from year to year, so coverage should be verified at every visit.
- Other payers: New Jersey personal injury protection (PIP) auto insurance for accident injuries, TRICARE for military families, and workers’ compensation claims under the New Jersey Division of Workers’ Compensation fee schedule.
Each payer has its own portal, prior authorization list and appeal process. We track them so your claims go out clean the first time.
NJ FamilyCare Billing Rules Practices Should Know
NJ FamilyCare has several rules that catch practices off guard:
- Two-step enrollment: providers enroll with NJ FamilyCare first, and then choose which managed care organizations to contract with. Being enrolled with the state does not put a provider in every plan’s network. See our medical credentialing services.
- Timely filing: managed care organizations have required claims within 180 days of the date of service, with a longer window for corrected claims and different rules for claims with other insurance. Each plan’s current deadline should be checked in its provider manual, and claim ages tracked from day one.
- Plan changes: members can change plans, so eligibility should be checked before every visit. See our insurance eligibility verification services.
- Prior authorization: each plan publishes its own list of services that need approval. We confirm requirements before the service through our prior authorization services.
New Jersey Prompt-Pay Rules for Commercial Claims
New Jersey’s Health Claims Authorization, Processing and Payment Act requires health carriers to pay a clean claim within 30 calendar days when it is submitted electronically and 40 calendar days when it is submitted on paper. Carriers that pay late owe simple interest at 12% a year. The law also limits how long a carrier can seek repayment of an overpaid claim, generally to 18 months from the first payment. Many practices never collect interest because nobody tracks claim ages against the deadline. Our A/R follow-up flags late-paid claims so you know when a payer is out of compliance.
Billing for New Jersey Auto Injury and Cross-Border Patients
New Jersey patients injured in car accidents usually have personal injury protection (PIP) coverage, where medical bills are paid by the patient’s auto insurer under their own billing rules and fee schedule instead of by their health plan. We help practices send accident claims to the right payer, document injuries correctly and follow up on auto claims, which are handled very differently from health claims.
Because New Jersey sits between New York City and Philadelphia, many practices also treat patients who live in New York, Pennsylvania or Delaware, or who work in one state and live in another. That means out-of-state plans, different Blue Cross companies and out-of-network rules. We verify coverage before the visit so those claims are not denied for the wrong plan.

- Behavioral health practices where benefits and authorization rules differ by plan.
