Why Colorado Practices Need Professional Medical Billing Support

Billing errors, delayed follow-ups, and in-house staffing challenges often lead to denied claims, delayed reimbursements, and staff burnout. Managing billing internally can be particularly challenging due to the evolving payer rules and compliance requirements across Colorado.

Outsourced medical billing services in Colorado ensure claims are submitted correctly, denials are addressed promptly, and reimbursements arrive faster. Professional billing support also reduces compliance risks and creates predictable revenue, helping practices operate more efficiently.

Why Colorado Practices Need Professional Medical Billing Support

Medical Billing Services in Colorado Run Through RAEs

Health First Colorado, the state Medicaid program run by the Department of Health Care Policy and Financing, is built around Regional Accountable Entities. Fee for service claims are processed by the state’s fiscal agent, Gainwell Technologies, through the Colorado interChange system, while care is coordinated by the RAEs. That makes enrollment a two step job: providers enroll with the state through the interChange portal to bill fee for service, and many must also enroll or contract with a RAE. Each RAE can have its own rules, so we read every contract.

Behavioral Health Claims Have Two Destinations

Colorado sends most behavioral health claims through the Regional Accountable Entities, which require their own enrollment, while fee for service behavioral health claims go to the state’s fiscal agent. A therapist, psychiatrist or group practice can have both kinds of patient in one week. We send each claim to the right place and keep authorizations organized by plan.

365 Days to File, 60 Days to Fix a Denial

Fee for service claims generally must be submitted within 365 days of the date of service. A denied claim may be resubmitted within 60 days of the last remittance advice, and retroactive eligibility has its own request process. For commercial plans, Colorado’s prompt pay law defines a clean claim as one on the uniform claim form with all required fields and documents, and generally requires payment within 30 days for electronic claims and 45 days for other claims. A claim that needs more information is not clean and follows a separate process. We track every claim against these dates.

Mountain Towns, Ski Resorts and the Front Range

Colorado’s mountain and resort communities serve visitors from other states, so injury and urgent care visits are common and out of state and out of network plans are routine. We verify coverage before the visit so those claims are not denied for the wrong plan. Novitas Solutions processes Medicare Part B in Jurisdiction H, shared with Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Commercial claims go to Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Kaiser Permanente Colorado, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare and Aetna. TRICARE covers families near Colorado Springs, Fort Carson, Peterson Space Force Base and the Air Force Academy, and workers’ compensation follows the Division of Workers’ Compensation fee schedule. We support practices in Denver, Colorado Springs, Aurora, Fort Collins, Lakewood, Boulder, Pueblo, Greeley, Grand Junction and Longmont, fully remotely, including rural health clinics and federally qualified health centers.
