Georgia Medical Billing: Payers, Medicare and Medicaid

Practices in Georgia bill Georgia Medicaid (where most members are served by the Georgia Families care management organizations), Medicare Part B through Palmetto GBA (Jurisdiction J), and commercial plans such as Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, alongside national carriers like Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare and Humana. Each payer has its own enrollment, authorization and claim-edit rules, so a claim that is clean for one payer is often rejected by another.

What we check for Georgia practices before claims are submitted:

  • Payer enrollment and credentialing for every provider and location, including Medicaid managed care plans
  • Patient eligibility verification at scheduling, because coverage often moves between Medicaid, Medicare Advantage and commercial plans
  • Prior authorization requirements by payer and service
  • ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS coding and modifier accuracy against current payer policy

Practice Perfect provides outsourced medical billing, coding, credentialing and revenue cycle management for Georgia practices. Every new practice starts with a free billing audit that shows where claims are being denied or delayed.

Georgia Payers We Bill Every Day

Georgia has a Medicaid program run through managed care, a large Medicare population served by a regional contractor and a big mix of metro Atlanta group practices and rural clinics. Our team bills all of the major payers:

  • Georgia Medicaid and PeachCare for Kids: run by the Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH) through Georgia Families, with members enrolled in care management organizations: Amerigroup Community Care, CareSource and Peach State Health Plan. Children in foster care and certain other groups are served through a separate program, Georgia Families 360°.
  • Georgia Pathways to Coverage: the state’s limited Medicaid expansion for adults who meet work, school or community service requirements.
  • Original Medicare: Part B claims processed by Palmetto GBA, the Medicare Administrative Contractor for Georgia (Jurisdiction J, shared with Alabama and Tennessee).
  • Commercial insurers: Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Humana and Kaiser Permanente Georgia.
  • Other payers: TRICARE for military families near Fort Moore, Fort Stewart, Robins Air Force Base and Kings Bay, and workers’ compensation claims under the Georgia State Board of Workers’ Compensation.

Each payer has its own portal, prior authorization list and appeal process. We track them so your claims go out clean the first time.

Georgia Medicaid Billing Rules Practices Should Know

Georgia Medicaid has several rules that catch practices off guard:

  • Group and billing NPI enrollment: group and billing providers must enroll their billing or group NPI with DCH in the state’s GAMMIS system, and rendering providers must be affiliated with the group, or claims can be denied or rejected. Each care management organization also credentials providers separately. See our medical credentialing services.
  • Three plans, three rule sets: each care management organization has its own provider manual, portal, prior authorization list and appeal process. See our prior authorization services.
  • Eligibility changes: members can change plans and coverage can change month to month, so eligibility should be checked before every visit. See our insurance eligibility verification services.
  • Timely filing: Georgia Medicaid has required primary claims to be received within six months after the month of service, with different rules for secondary claims, resubmissions and retroactive eligibility, and each plan sets its own limits. Check the current manual and each plan’s contract, and track claim ages from day one.

Georgia Prompt-Pay Rules for Commercial Claims

Georgia’s prompt-pay law for health insurers generally requires a clean electronic claim to be paid within 15 working days and a clean paper claim within 30 working days. If a claim is denied or not paid, the insurer must explain why and say what additional information it needs within the same period. Many practices never follow up on claims that sit past those dates because nobody tracks claim ages against the deadline. Our A/R follow-up flags late-paid claims so you know when a payer is out of compliance.

Billing for Atlanta Metro and Rural Georgia

Georgia practices range from large multi-specialty groups in metro Atlanta to small clinics in south and middle Georgia. Metro practices often work with many payers and several locations, and need consistent credentialing, eligibility checks and reporting across all of them. Rural practices rely on rural health clinics, federally qualified health centers and telehealth billing, which follow special payment rules.

Georgia is also not a full Medicaid expansion state, so many adult patients are uninsured or covered through Georgia Pathways or marketplace plans instead. We verify each patient’s coverage before the visit so claims go to the right payer.

Medical Billing Across Georgia

We support practices throughout the state, including Atlanta, Savannah, Augusta, Columbus, Macon, Athens, Sandy Springs, Roswell, Albany, Valdosta and Marietta, fully remotely.

Common Georgia practice types we work with:

  • Primary care and family medicine clinics serving Medicare, Medicaid and commercial patients.
  • Behavioral health practices where benefits and authorization rules differ by plan.
  • Specialty groups in cardiology, orthopedics and other specialties with heavy prior authorization requirements.
  • Urgent care and pediatric practices with high volume and mixed payers. See our urgent care billing services.
